The attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, threw America into a new period of political turmoil. The attacks sparked the second Gulf War and a wave of paranoid Islamophobia throughout the country. The military action in the Middle East sparked a new wave of protest music that mirrored that developed in response to the Vietnam War.

In both instances, traditional patriotic sentiment was in support of the war and the United States government, but as conflict continued Americans grew weary of constant casualties. The United States withdrew without victory from Vietnam, but the serious ethnic and religious conflicts in the Middle East have never reached a satisfactory conclusion.
