The [Dixie] Chicks

Many groups that rose to fame in the 1990s were largely apolitical, The [Dixie] Chicks were no exception. Prior to March 2003, their most political song was “Goodbye Earl” which addressed themes of domestic violence and a narrative of violent revenge.

On March 10, 2003, while onstage in London, England, singer Natalie Maines made the comment that the group of Texan musicians was “ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas,” because of his aggressive military action in the Middle East.

This comment incited derision from conservatives and country fans across the United States – bringing into question the limitations of free speech during times of war.
